James the Greater – Apostle, Pilgrim, and Patron Saint
James the Greater, son of Zebedee and brother of John, was one of Jesus’ favorite apostles. As a fisherman in Galilee, Jesus called him the “Son of Thunder” for his passionate nature. He witnessed the Transfiguration and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane.
After Pentecost, James preached in Jerusalem and was beheaded around 44 AD by order of King Herod, becoming the first apostolic martyr.
According to tradition, he also preached in Spain. His relics were transported to Santiago de Compostela, now one of the most important pilgrimage destinations. The famous Camino de Santiago is still followed by pilgrims and spiritual seekers today.
